Dysport Journal
Dysport is a prescription injection that uses botulinum toxin A which is the same neurotoxin used in Botox.
In the early 90s, Dysport was used by UK physicians as a treatment for muscle spasms. Ipsen, the company that manufactures Dysport, sought the aid of Medicis in 2006 to distribute Dysport in the United States and Canada. In 2009, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved Dysport for use as a wrinkle injection.
Dysport Treatment Procedure and Usual Results
Dysport is injected directly into the facial muscles and attacks the glabellar muscles. Glabellar muscles form frown lines in the forehead and are immobilized when attacked by Dysport.
Dysport takes an average of one to seven days to take effect, with three being the most common. Dysport can last up to thirteen months in some patients, while Botox only lasts up to four months. Dysport has less protein than Botox, causing it to break down at a slower rate than its cousin which allows Dysport treatment to last for a much greater amount of time.
Cost of Dysport and Where to go for Treatment
The price of Dysport varies slightly from clinic to clinic. The average price of Dysport is $300 to $400 dollars for one treatment. Dysport is cheaper than Botox, per unit, but it takes about 3 units to achieve the same results as 2.5 units of Botox. Dysport is still slightly new to American users, causing several places to offer a discount of up to 20 percent on the treatments.
It is best to receive a Dysport treatment from an experienced Botox practitioner. Because Dysport diffuses up to 3 inches, compared to Botox’s 1 inch, it is important that the person making the injections has a trained hand, in order to keep the Dysport from attacking muscles in the face that may cause unwanted areas to droop.
Dysport is new to the market, but it appears that the treatment lasts longer than Botox. Dysport is cheaper than Botox on a per unit basis, but it takes more units to have the same effect as Botox. If a person wishes to receive a Dysport treatment to temporarily erase frown lines in the face, they should visit an experienced Botox practitioner.
